My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding Party

Schoolgirl Mia Jenkins shunned all traditional teenage parties to celebrate her 13th birthday - with a bash themed on TV's My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Rather than going for princess, skating, or swimming parties, bouncy castles or a class trip to the cinema, Mia chose the controversial Channel 4 reality show as the theme to toast the start of her teenage years. In a sign of our obsession with reality TV shows, Mia dressed in a designer white dress and sparkly tiara -just like the travelling brides in the hit programme. She arrived at the party in a decorated horse and carriage along with a gypsy-like burly minder. Even Mia's birthday cake was flamboyantly decked out with a gypsy like doll during the party for 100 guests at the community centre at Mossley, Greater Manchester. Her parents Vicky, 35, a housewife and Paul, also 35, a bus driver agreed to throw the themed bash for caring Mia as a thank you for her help in looking after five-year-old sister Tina who is autistic. The teenager became an avid viewer of the programme which features bare knuckle fighting and a string of four letter words. One episode No Place Like Home caused controversy after it showed young girls provocatively dancing and wearing full make-up. Her mother said: ''My suggestion for the party was Cinderella or a Princess type theme but Mia was just saying 'no' and kept saying she wanted it based on the 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' show. "She just loves the programme, she's watched every single episode and if I get time I'll watch it with her. She doesn't pay much attention to fighting or strange parts of it, it doesn't bother her - all she's watching it for is the dresses and nails, fake tan and parties really. If she does see something she just turns to me and says 'that's not right' so it doesn't worry me.'' The story went in Take It Easy magazine after Mia's family spoke to Cavendish Press.
