Tears of Bloodgate doctor - Aug 25 2010

The match-day rugby doctor at the centre of the 'Bloodgate' scandal wept as she said she will "always have a guilty conscience" about what she had done. Dr Wendy Chapman, 49, cut the lip of Harlequins winger Tom Williams to make a fake injury with a blood capsule appear real during the Heinekan cup quarter-final against Irish side Leinster in April last year. Williams' substitution made way for specialist goal kicker Nick Evans to be brought back on in the final minutes with Quins trailing 6-5. They went on to lose the match, and the scandal led to a £259,000 fine for the club, a three year ban for director of rugby Dean Richards and a four month ban for Williams following a disciplinary hearing. Dr Chapman fought back tears as she told a medical tribunal that she was horrified when she realised she had been "duped" by the apparent injury to Williams, 25, but had succumbed to his pressure to cut his lip to make his substitution appear legitimate. he case featured in the Daily Express and other newspapers after Cavendish Press cover the court case.
