
A close knit neighbourhood has staged a £122,000 whipround - to keep their favourite beauty spot out of the hands of housing developers. Locals clubbed together to buy a 13 acre field near their homes when they discovered it was up for auction - and feared property bosses would snap it up to build houses or a supermarket on it. Cow Field in Whaley Bridge, in High Peak, Derbyshire has been popular with dog walkers and kite flyers alike and has been used by locals for over 60 years. But it has been the subject of interest from developers for up to 40 years and in 1995 a planning application for over 30 homes was narrowly defeated. The 14 string group of residents stumped up their own money and won the bid when the land went under the hammer at Frank Marshalls auctioneers in Knutsford, Cheshire.
