Crash for cash scammers - Aug 11 2010

Two ambulance chasers who ran an accident claims firm were facing jail over a £12m ''crash for cash'' scam in which they staged car smashes to swindle pay outs from scores of innocent motorists. Brothers Rezwan and Rehan Javed, 33, created an ''industry of dishonesty' in which they paid drivers £500 a time to manufacture road collisions so they could manage the insurance claims and refer them to solicitors in return for a fee. Their "desire for profit" led them to help stage the ''perfect collision'' in which drivers would slam their brakes on at roundabouts causing innocent motorists to collide into the back of them, so the brothers could pocket cash from the insurance claims. The scam was hailed as the biggest of its kind in the UK the brothers were arrested after one of their drivers was followed by surveillance police from their company offices to a roundabout in the Trafford Park area of Manchester where he "induced" a collison. At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester Rezwan, 33, and 35-year old Rehan, 35, both of Dovedale Close, Burnley, Lancashire were convicted of conspiracy to defraud and possession of an article for use in fraud. The story featured in the Daily Mail and other newspapers after Cavendish Press covered the court case.
