Prof's chemical alert - July 17 2010

A chemistry professor sparked a full scale alert at Britain's second largest airport by smuggling dangerous and flammable chemicals onto a passenger plane. Father-of-three Joseph Lori, 49, brought the chemicals legally in the UK intending to take them back to his native Nigeria for a PHD student - but
packed them amongst his clothing in his baggage. He then failed to tell check-in staff at Manchester Airport he was carrying phosphorus oxychloride and ethylamine - two dangerous chemicals that are
forbidden on aircrafts, and a further bottle of ethyal acetoacetate in his bag. When his was bag was taken to the hold of the KLM aircraft from Terminal 2 Departures, two baggage handlers noticed an ammonium smell causing one workers' eyes to water and his chest to tighten. The two men alerted their bosses and a full scale chemical alert was raised while the casualties were taken to hospital in contamination suits for
observation. The story went in the Sun after Cavendish Press sent a reporter to cover the court case.
