Expenses row MPs get legal aid to fight case

Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:19

Tax payers had a slap in the face when three MPs accused of fiddling expenses

were awarded legal aid to foot their court bills.

The disclosure that David Chaytor, Elliot Morley and Jim Devine, accused of a

£60,000 expenses fraud, would receive legal aid was denounced as a 'complete

outrage' by David Cameron, the Daily Mail reported.

Their legal teams will argue that the MPs are immune from prosecution and can

only be tried in the House of Commons, but the trio are due to go on trial

later this year at Southwark Crown Court, London, accused of theft by false

accounting over receiving almost £60,000 in allowances through false mortgage

applications, rent claims and invoices for services.

The politicians all deny the charges.

The Daily Mail also reported that Prime Minister Gordon Brown told a radio

station in Derby that the MPs should pay the money back.

According to the Mail, Mr Brown told BBC Radio Derby, "I think this money will

have to be paid back by these politicians. I think the evidence is that people

in their position will have to pay back the money - or most of the money - they

get in legal aid.

"We have actually abolished this free legal aid from the end of June, so it has

to be means-tested from the end of June and they wouldn't have got it in these

circumstances. The law has changed, so I think the money will have to be paid

back."

I'm pulling out of marathon says Jordan

Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:14

Reality tv star Katie Price has sparked pregnancy rumours by pulling out of the

London Marathon just weeks before the race.

The glamour model put a statement on her website telling fans that she was

withdrawing from the 26-mile race after taking advice from doctors.

Reports in the Sun newspaper suggested she had only begun her training two

weeks ago after a continuing knee injury, but the 31-year-old had been planning

to run in aid of blindness charity Vision.

The mum-of-three, who married cage fighter husband Alex Reid in a Las Vegas in

February, said, "It is with great regret that Im going to have to pull out of

this years Virgin London Marathon.

"Training has been going really well, and I was really looking forward to

running again this year to raise as much money as possible for Vision, but I

have been advised by doctors I should not compete this year.

"Fortunately I was part of a team who are still running for Vision so it would

be great if you could still support them at www.justgiving.co.uk/danny-price.

"I wish everyone the best of luck, I know how hard this is so I have nothing

but admiration for each and every runner... hope to see you in 2011."

The pair have made no secret of the fact that they wish to have children, but

their spokesperson refused to expand on the medical reason to the Sun - only

confirming that the I'm a Celebrity star wasn't pregnant.

Katie, mum to Harvey, Junior and Princess, ran the London marathon last year in

aid of vision with ex-husband Peter Andre - just days after suffering a

miscarriage.

A married couple from south Wales who won £45.5m on the Euromillions lottery have spoken of how it was "a very funny couple of minutes" before it sank in.

Les Scadding, 53, an unemployed mechanic, and wife Samantha Peachey-Scadding, 38, from Caerleon, said they had to double check their ticket.

The second ticket is held by a syndicate of Liverpool IT workers called the "Magnificent Seven."

Each of the Hewlett Packard employees has banked £6.5m. The syndicate, which only formed four months ago, includes John Walsh, 57, James Bennett, 28, Sean Connor, 32, Alex Parry, 19, Emma Cartwright, 23, Ceri Scullion, 35 and Donna Rhodes, 39.

Until now, the biggest single win was by Angela Kelly, from South Lanarkshire, who won more than £35m (39m euros) in August 2007.

Nine European countries participate in the EuroMillions lottery - Britain, the Irish Republic, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg. In May, a ticket bought in Spain broke the European lottery's record by netting a 126m euros (£110m) jackpot.

Griffin's Churchill claim

Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:04

British National Party chairman Nick Griffin has caused outrage by claiming wartime leader Winston Churchill would be a member of his party if he was alive today.

He said many of Sir Winston's views were more in tune with the BNP than other political parties.

During a series of outbursts in the run up to his apperance on BBC Question Time, Griffin said Tony Blair and Gordon Brown should be HANGED for waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan and compared British Army chiefs to Nazi war criminals.

His remarks followed an attack on the BNP by senior Army figures, including ex-Army chiefs Generals Sir Mike Jackson and Sir Richard Dannatt and veterans.

They were angry at the neo-Nazi party's use of British military imagery in a bid to pass themselves off as a mainstream political organisation.

X Factor babe Cheryl Cole wowed fans with her solo routine on the ITV1 talent show - despite being accused of copying her outfit from raunchy rejects Kandy Rain.

Now Cheryl has been accused of double standards although her aides insist her outfit was not revealing as she "wore a jacket on top.''

Cheryl was perfoming her song Fight For This Love in a dance routine described by Simon Cowell as ''incredible.''
